ABOUT YEM

Origins.

The Birth of YEM

The Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP), an annual diplomatic cultural exchange program spearheaded by the Cabinet Office, Government of Japan promoting friendship and mutual understanding among youths of Japan and the ten Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries, has empowered the participating youth to create projects supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Born from the recently concluded SSEAYP Youth Conference 2021, the participating youth hope to move towards supporting SDG Goal 8: Economic Growth and Decent Work in encouraging more informed, and empathetic youth leaders to make a change for the future.

Employment.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all sectors of the economy. According to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals report of 2021, an equivalent to 255 million full time jobs have been lost which is four times greater than the number lost during the 2007-2009 global financial crisis. Meanwhile, 1.6 billion informal economy workers who lack assistance and support were severely displaced. Employment and decent work stimulates the economy to achieve a sustainable and resilient society. The Paris Agreement recognized it as one of the goals for SDG as a universal call for action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.

The pandemic has undeniably led to an increase in youth unemployment. As the youth of today and visionaries of the future, it is our ultimate responsibility to empower the youth and ignite a sense of responsibility to act now and help the employment sector in their own ways.
